Facebook to Launch a “Gmail Killer” This Monday

If the rumors are true, it will be interesting to see how many people adopted Facebook as there new mail client. This could be a huge hit to Gmail, which has become one of the most popular email clients on the Web.

Amplifyd from thehill.com

Rumors of a Facebook e-mail client, known internally as Project Titan or the "Gmail killer," have been circulating the blogosphere since February, but according to TechCrunch, the announcement will finally come during a special event Monday at Facebook headquarters.

An e-mail service from Facebook would likely pose a serious challenge to established providers such as Google and Yahoo!, thanks to Facebook's emphasis on re-creating users' offline social networks for the Web.

‘mini-Big Bang’ Created By Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project which has been in the works for close to twenty years has just produced a 'mini-Big Bang'. This is both amazing and a tad concerning at the same time as this experiment is creating some Sun like temperatures inside the closed environment. It will take sometime for scientists to sort through all the data that is being collected but its worth noting additional similar collisions are happening every day in the collider.

Amplifyd from www.bbc.co.uk

The Large Hadron Collider has successfully created a "mini-Big Bang" by smashing together lead ions instead of protons.

The scientists working at the enormous machine on Franco-Swiss border achieved the unique conditions on 7 November.

The experiment created temperatures a million times hotter than the centre of the Sun.

VeriSign Awarding $75K Grant

It's nice to see big companies giving back in interesting ways. In honor of the 25th anniversary of ".com", VeriSign has created this grant program with a $75K award. An impressive list of judges, including Vint Cerf and Michael Chertoff, will evaluate the submissions. The program was designed to "foster new research, advance security and stability and improve Internet infrastructure for the next 25 years."

Unfortunately, only academics and non-profits are being targeted - limiting the ability of for-profit tech startups to benefit in any way.

Amplifyd from www.25yearsof.com

VeriSign will be awarding four $75,000 grants in fall 2010 with the goal of strengthening the Internet infrastructure in the following areas:

  • Overall Internet Infrastructure
  • Domain Name System (DNS) Security
  • Internationalization of the Internet
  • Infrastructure Applications

In order to qualify, applicants must be members of an academic institution, researchers, a non-profit organization or a technology high school with an international sister school.

Caterina Fake Says Goodbye to Hunch

Hunch co-founder, Caterina Fake, is leaving the 3 year old startup. Partially because the company is changing direction and she feels her skills are no longer needed. But more importantly is the relationship with her co-founder, Chris Dixon, which apparently has degraded to a point they no longer want to work together. Fake will remain an advisor to the company.

Amplifyd from www.businessinsider.com

Technically, Fake will remain involved with the company as an "advisor." But that'll just be PR. Though she may sometimes rep the company in the media, her day-to-day work with the company will end.

her personal relationship with Hunch cofounder Chris Dixon reached a breaking point earlier this year. We understand the relationship has since grown cordial, but irreparable.

The second major reason Fake is leaving the company is that her personal relationship with Hunch cofounder Chris Dixon reached a breaking point earlier this year. We understand the relationship has since grown cordial, but irreparable.

Bing Rolls Out Facebook Social Search Features

Social search has been talked about for years and to date no one company has nailed it. So we are interested to see if the integration of Facebook into Bing will create a sticky social search experience. Past attempts have failed because they were social but they expected the users to help dictate search results. Since users are generally lazy and really not interested in helping curate search they did not pan out. Have you seen the new Bing social search? If so, what do you think?

Today we are completing our deployment of our new social features that we built in partnership with Facebook.Read more at www.bing.com

37Signals Launches Chalk: A browser-based app for iPad

The folks at 37Signals had 3 hours of free time so they whipped up this little ditty for the iPad. It was inspired by their office and looks to help foster collaboration. What do you think?

Amplifyd from 37signals.com
One of the coolest things about Chalk is it’s a website. There’s no app store approval process we had to endure. We used technologies we’re already familiar with. To use Chalk just go to chalk.37signals.com on your iPad.
